Majes irrigation project generate 450 thousand jobs in agribusiness and services

The development of the irrigation project Majes Siguas Second Stage will generate 450 thousand direct jobs and indirect exports by $ 365 million, informed the Agency of Promotion of Private Investment (ProInversión). He said that only in the Angostura Dam will generate 6,000 jobs directly, while the agricultural production phase of the project will give permanent employment to 160 thousand people in the agricultural and agribusiness sector.It also generates 290 thousand jobs in industry, services, linked to agricultural production, industrial and export markets.
Will also incorporate agriculture uncultivated 38.500 acres located in Pampas Siguas, 8,000 barren lands of the pampas of Majes addition to the modernization of 15,000 hectares of land in actual production.
Thus, it will boost the cultivation of vegetables and fruit, using drip irrigation, agro-industry and encouraging exports.
ProInversión executive director, Cayetana Aljovín indicated that this project is linked to the granting of the regional airport of Arequipa, which is part of the package of airports in the south since it requires having a modern air terminal for export.
The project involves the implementation Majes of the Angostura dam of 1,140 million cubic meters of water transmission and distribution works to 38.500 hectares.
Execution of works will commence 18 months after the signing of the concession contract, since in the first six months, the investor must prepare the project design and submit for approval by the regional government of Arequipa.
In the 12 months after the winner has run a good pro to get the funding required to develop this irrigation project.
The concession period is for 20 years considering four years of project implementation.
In addition, there are two more processes to be performed after granting good towards this project: the auction sale of 46,500 hectares in the second quarter of 2010, and the granting of two hydroelectric power plants with generating capacity will be 530 megawatts (Mw).
